A Naturally Carolina Road Trip

This road trip will take you outdoor exploring within the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, from driving the rural inland roads to kayaking down black water rivers, get ready for a "Naturally Carolina" experience!

Driving our scenic byways

It doesn't matter where you're driving in the Pee Dee, just make sure you look out the window as you go and take in the farmland vistas and riverside landscapes. There are a few mapped out roadways that are guaranteed some stellar views. Plantersville Scenic Byway is a 12-mile route adjacent to the Great Pee Dee River that connects historic and nature sites like Samworth Wildlife Management Area. There are also some self-guided options along the Francis Marion Trail, which will all guide you through the area's deep Revolutionary War history.

Exploring the blueways

From coastal creeks to cypress swamps and riverbanks, we have you covered for the ultimate outdoor experience on and off the water. Paddle history on our Revolutionary Rivers, or pass through rice field country on the Waccamaw River Blue Trail. We also have the Black River, the Santee, and the Sampit; all majestic in their very own unique ways. You can't go wrong picking a blueway to explore because they all come loaded with fishing spots, swimming holes, outfitters, and camping options to choose from. You can even plan a fly-fishing excursion on Hobcaw Barony, which is a meticulously preserved coastal environment that was formerly made up of several plantations.

Start your engines

From the roar of the crowd and the burning of rubber on asphalt, racing is quite the outdoor experience for anyone visiting the Pee Dee. Check out the Darlington Raceway for a full schedule of events and get your tailgate on!

An arts & gardens stroll

If your idea of a fun outdoor day would be strolling and admiring nature and art, boy do we have some treats in store for you! To start you have the world renowned Brookgreen Gardens. The former plantation land is a National Historic Landmark and fills over 9,000 acres with magical flora & fauna alongside one of the most comprehensive collections of American Figurative Sculpture. Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is another must-see and is unlike anywhere else in the world. It's only three acres, but his famous topiaries make this a whimsical and quirky experience in all of the right ways. Also, you can always arrange a trip around the timing of Artfields, one of the newest and largest juried art events and venture into the nearby Moore Farms Botanical Garden for a workshop or tour!
